What Is a Tax-Exempt Letter?

A Tax-Exempt Letter confirms that Toastmasters International is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This designation means Toastmasters operates for educational purposes and is exempt from federal income tax.

Why You Might Need It

Clubs and district leaders commonly request a tax-exempt letter for:

  • Venue requests (schools, libraries, community centers)
  • Donations or sponsorships
  • Grant applications
  • Fee waivers or nonprofit discounts
  • Proof of nonprofit status for administrative or financial purposes

What 501(c)(3) Means

Being a 501(c)(3) organization means:

  • Toastmasters is a registered nonprofit
  • Donations may be tax-deductible (subject to donor tax rules)
  • Funds must be used to support educational and charitable activities
  • The organization does not operate for profit

How to Get the Tax-Exempt Letter

The Tax-Exempt Letter is not posted publicly, but it is available upon request.

👉 To request a copy:
Contact your District Director at dd@midwestspeakers.org, who can provide the official tax-exempt documentation as needed.

Helpful Tip

If a venue or organization asks for the letter, request it early—especially when planning events, open houses, Speechcraft programs, or Youth Leadership activities.
